LDMRC Strengthens Research Ties with KLU India University through Academic Visit

Vijayawada, India | 6–10 October 2025

The Head of the Low Dimensional Materials Research Centre (LDMRC),  Professor Dr. Wan Haliza Binti Abd. Majid, from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya, led an academic visit to Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation Deemed to be University (India)(KLU), Vijayawada, India. The visit, undertaken together with Associate Professor Dr. Thamil Selvi Velayutham, marked an important step in advancing international collaboration in materials science and nanotechnology.

The delegation was invited by the Faculty of Science and Humanities and the Faculty of Engineering in conjunction with the inaugural ceremony of the Centre of Excellence in Flexible Electronics at KLU. The visit aimed to strengthen institutional partnerships, explore joint research opportunities, and represent Universiti Malaya and LDMRC at this significant event.

Highlights of the Visit

The program began with a courtesy meeting with Professor G. Pardha Saradhi Varma, Vice-Chancellor of KL India University, along with senior university officials. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Saravana Kumar Kumarasagam, Consul General of Malaysia (Southern India, Chennai), and Mr. Wan Ahmad Tarmizi Wan Idris, Trade Consul.

During the inaugural ceremony, Professor Dr. Wan Haliza delivered a guest speech on behalf of LDMRC, emphasizing the importance of international collaboration in flexible and sustainable materials research. The event was attended by members of the university’s senior management, faculty, students, and representatives from industry.

Exploring Research Infrastructure

The LDMRC delegation toured several of KLU’s leading facilities, including:

• Centre of Excellence in Flexible Electronics
 • Centre for Nanotechnology and Advanced Functional Materials Research
 • Central Instrumentation Facility

The visit also included stops at the Central Library and University Sports Complex, where the delegation gained insights into the university’s vibrant academic and research environment.

Discussions and Collaborative Opportunities

Discussions focused on developing joint research programs, student exchange initiatives, and collaborative publications in the fields of nanomaterials and flexible electronics. Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed earlier in February 2025 between Universiti Malaya and the Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation.

Key potential areas for collaboration identified during the visit include:
 1. Flexible and Wearable Electronics
 2. Low-Dimensional Materials (Graphene, 2D Semiconductors)
 3. Nanofabrication and Advanced Characterization
 4. Joint Research Grants and Postgraduate Supervision
 5. Academic and Student Mobility Programs

Joint Research Forum

Another key event during the visit was the Joint Research Forum between the Low Dimensional Materials Research Centre (LDMRC) and KL University. This forum, held on October 8, 2025, from 2 pm to 5 pm at Rose Hall, served as a critical platform to foster deeper academic collaboration and mutual research opportunities, specifically focusing on Materials and Energy Innovation. Researchers from both institutions, including Associate Professor Thamil Selvi from Universiti Malaya and Associate Professors Dr. V. Vivekananthan and Dr. A. Aravindhan from KL University, exchanged knowledge and shared updates on their ongoing work, actively promoting synergistic relationships that are expected to lead to joint grants, collaborative conferences, and visiting scholars. The event, organized by the Centre of Excellence in Flexible Electronics (Microelectronics Research Group), brought together faculty and students working on targeted areas like low dimensional materials, flexible and wearable energy harvesters, and bio-nanoelectronics.

Outcomes and Future Directions

The visit successfully strengthened institutional ties between Universiti Malaya and KL India University. Both parties expressed enthusiasm to pursue joint projects, academic exchanges, and collaborative events such as workshops and training programs in emerging materials technologies.

Dr. Wan Haliza commended KLU’s strong commitment to interdisciplinary research and innovation, noting that its focus on applied research and industrial partnerships aligns closely with LDMRC’s mission.

Looking Ahead

The LDMRC plans to continue dialogue toward formalizing a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to operationalize collaborative research. Future initiatives may include joint symposia, mobility programs, and capacity-building activities that will benefit researchers and students from both institutions.
